The results of Races 7 & 8 and final series positions are now available to view on the Results page. Well done to all the prize-winners, we look forward to seeing all our competitors in the Autumn Series which commences on Saturday 20th September. Our thanks as well to all those who have helped run the series this spring, including the Race With Condor team of Bill Oakley and Tony Harvey, and also to PSC's David Clark who has co-ordinated and organised the Parhelion over the last 2 years.

Parhelion Spring Series Race 6 - Long Race

Our long distance took place today, the sixth sailed race in this year's Spring Series. Results can be found here.

Parhelion Spring Series Races 4 & 5

The results for races 4 & 5 are now available on the Yacht Results page. The proposed third race was not sailed. We will see if we can incorporated this race into the remaining programme.

Parhelion Spring Series Races 1, 2 & 3

After last week's disappointment, today's conditions were far more favourable and the Parhelion Spring Series got underway. Races 1, 2 & 3 were sailed in bright and breezy conditions. Results can be found on the Yacht Results page.

Parhelion Series Programme

Due to last Saturday's cancellation of Races 1 & 2 the Parhelion programme has been revised to try and recover the lost races. On the 5th and 12th April the intention is to run three races per day, conditions permitting. The long distance race, originally planned for this coming weekend, 5th April, has been moved to 19th April.

Cancellation of Racing, Saturday 29th March

The Met Office inshore weather forecast for the Solent area for the 24 hours from 1800 today, Friday 28th March is as follows: Wind, West backing south 5 to 7, increasing gale 8 at times. Sea state, Moderate or rough, occasionally very rough later. At best we feel this forecast is marginal for racing, especially considering the forecast of gale 8 winds at unknown times and for an unknown duration. The sea state is also an area of concern, with the very rough conditions forecast for 'later' meaning 12 hours from the issue of the forecast, in other words, from 0600 tomorrow morning.

It is therefore, with regret, we have taken the decision to cancel tomorrow's opening races for the Spring Series. We trust that our competitors will understand this decision and bear in mind that it was not taken lightly. We look forward to seeing you all next week for the long-distance race, when hopefully the weather will be more clement.

Early warning of adverse weather - Saturday 29th March

At the time of posting, the five-day weather forecast for Portsmouth is forecasting wind speeds of 30mph (F6) and gusts of 50mph (F9) for Saturday 29th March, the first weekend of the Parhelion Spring Series 2008. If conditions occur as predicted, there is likely to be an effect on Saturday's racing, ultimately racing may not take place. As usual, the decision to run Saturday's racing will be taken on the morning of the race, unless the weather forecast is sufficiently poor to warrant a decision on the previous evening.

Parhelion Autumn Series 2007 - Final Weekend Correction

An error has been found in the results for the last two races of the series which has affected the final places for Club Class only. The IRC class is not affected. Although Stargift won the last race, because her handicap had not been included and that fact was subsequently missed, it affected the tie-breaking for third place between Just in Time and One More Knot. Consequently when the handicap is included and Stargift is placed first, the Appendix A8.1 and 8.2 tie-break rules resolve the tie in favour of Just in Time over One More Knot.

Rules included for reference:

A8 SERIES TIES
A8.1  If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s
race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first
point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of
the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

A8.2 If a tie remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked

in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be
broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so
on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of
them are excluded scores.

The first two places in Club Class are not affected. All the scores in all the races for the series are recalculated after each new race and any changes to fleets. Revised results have now been posted on Yacht Results page.

Clarification of Lady Helm races

In response to a number of queries we have received, concerning the Lady Helm races, please see the following clarification:
Those boats that can provide a lady helm for the day will compete for a separate trophy to be presented at the end of the series and the lady helm winner would receive a small prize after the race at the club. The basic ruling for the Lady helm racing is that the lady nominated would have charge of the helm and would not receive any physical help from when she took over the helm before the ten minute warning signal till after her boat crossed the finish line under normal sailing rules. The lady nominated will helm her boat for both races of the day unless the race committee deem otherwise.

Parhelion Spring Series 2006 - Saturday 1st April 2006

Notice to competitors in the Parhelion Spring Series:

As you will be aware, there were some problems with today's races. The root cause was the failure of the starter motor on the committee boat Condor. Condor was refitted in December and January with a new Diesel engine, including a new starter motor. Obviously no problems were experienced during last week's racing, nor in any of the other races Condor has been involved in so far this year.

On finding this problem, the race team immediately set about trying to repair the starter motor with the aim of getting Condor underway to run the day's races. However as we eventually found, the start motor had simply failed internally and there was no other solution than to replace the motor. This ruled Condor out of the racing for the day.

Because we were aware that the majority of the fleet was already heading out to the race area, the decision was then taken to attempt to run racing from two support RIBs. Although we were able to get the first race underway, we experienced significant problems trying to anchor the replacement committee boat Solent Storm. Multiple attempts were made to lay first one anchor and then two at a time, but at the start we were still having to use the engine to keep station. After the start, one of the anchor lines became wrapped around the propellor and subsequently cut.

Having lost one anchor and not wishing to loose the other, the decision was then taken to end the day's racing after first race and recover the race at a later date when both Condor and a full race team will be available.

Portsmouth Sailing Club and race-with-condor would like to apologise for the disappointment today's events will have caused. We would also like thank all our competitors for their patience and forbearance whilst we attempted to salvage the situation. As we hope you will appreciate, starter motor failure was unexpected and we would not wish to cancel racing unless it was absolutely necessary. We expect to be back to normal next week and we hope you will join us.

Also open to crew looking for a boat to join.

Autumn Series & the Frostbite

As ever, the Portsmouth Sailing Club Autumn Series yacht races and the Frostbite Dinghy Series will kick off on the first weekend in October (2nd and 3rd, respectively). More details and information will be available shortly. And remember: if you don't get asked to help out, you'll get asked to take part!

Victory Class Racing

On Wednesday 20th July, the Victory Class are holding our annual visitors and sponsors race.  This is your chance to join in on a real race in these Classic Solent dayboats.  You may choose to helm a boat, or crew, or bring your own crew or, if you prefer, sail with some regular Victory Class sailors - the choice is yours.
The race will start at 1900 off Haslar wall so you will need to be in Old Portsmouth by the Camber slipway at 1730 to leave by 1800.  This will give you time to meet your crew/the organisers and to get to your boat.
If you have any queries, please contact Victory Class Sailing Secretary
Graham Stone.

Crew List Amended

The original post for the crew list should have stated that it is open to PSC Members, Victory Class Members and entrants in all PSC racing series (for that series only). Apologies for any confusion

As there will be more of you than usual coming over the Club on Saturday, it may take a little more time for the RIB to reach you, but please bear with us and we will try to get to everyone as soon as possible. There will also be a light buffet and the bar will of course be open as usual.
