Excellent practice for Cowes Week, 2 races in the Eastern Solent, with the results combined for Day 3 of the IRC Solent Series. Starts will be in the vicinity of Gillkicker with the first Warning signal at 10.30.

Entries welcome from boats with an IRC rating of between 0.820 and 1.360.

Enter the IRC Solent Series events for just £30 per day through SCRA or SIRCOA by 9th July.

Wyllie Lecture Update

Ten additional tickets for this Wednesday's (23^rd June) Wyllie Lecture – Hilsea: Gateway to Portsmouth by Jane Smith – have become available. These were amongst an allocation given to Manna Tea Rooms and due to a misunderstanding there have not been sold.

The tickets can be paid for at the door on the night, but it would be advisable to let Tony Spender know (07730 982809) if you plan to purchase one.

This coming Wednesday (21st April) at 8.00pm we have Ninian Boyle of Venturescope speaking on One Vision – optics past and present. Ninian is a very interesting speaker and has a wealth of knowledge on optics, ranging from astronomic telescopes to every-day binoculars. This should be a fascinating and enjoyable talk. The cost is just £5, which includes wine and nibbles – a list is available at the bar. The evening is being arranged by Mark Goodenough with profits going to the Loft Fund – please do come along and support this worthy event (you would, of course, have to give up the opportunity of watching a Party Election Broadcast on TV - such are the sacrifices that Club members have to make!).

Tickets are still available at the bar for the St George’s Day Buffet Lunch (Sunday 25th April) at 1.00pm. This is one of the Club’s major social events of the year, which replaces the former Reefers & Roses. It’s not often that we smarten up on a Sunday lunchtime to socialise with fellow members, so don’t miss this opportunity. For a modest £10 per person you can enjoy freshly made luxury kedgeree served with new potatoes, fresh herbs and salad, and washed down with selected wines. There will be desserts to follow plus cheese and biscuits. The annual draw of the 100 Club traditionally takes place during this event and you can use the occasion to renew your 100 Club subscription or sign up if you are not already in it.

Work on the Loft is progressing steadily. If you are at the St George’s Day Buffet do take the opportunity to have a look upstairs.

The next lecture in our Wyllie Series is at 7.30pm on Wednesday 17th March (not the 24th March as previously advertised) and is entitled Portsmouth's Canal - a Doomed Venture? In the 1820s Portsmouth had a canal linking it with London. Why would anyone think that a coastal town needed an inland waterway? Dr John Stedman of Portsmouth Museums & Records Service explores the early 19th-century mind and the legacy of the canal in the city's landscape. Tickets, at £5 per person, include wine and cheese & biscuits. Three tickets are still available at the Club bar; further tickets are available from Manna (used to be Twiggs Café) at the junction of Broad Street and Pembroke Road. Details of forthcoming Wyllie lectures can always be found on the Wyllie Lectures page.

Two informal Club Suppers are being held in the next couple of weeks – both start at 8.15pm, cost £5 per person and are on a "first come, first served basis". The first is on Friday 12th March; the menu is still being finalised, but will be mouth watering. The second is on Friday 19th March, when delicious pizzas will be served. Don't miss out!

Morgan Allen, son of Graham Allen, is in the third year of a marine studies course at the University of Plymouth. As part of his dissertation he has prepared a short questionnaire on the need for compulsory training and age limits in the leisure sector of the marine industry. Morgan would be very grateful if members would complete a copy and email the results direct to him. A copy of the questionnaire, and full details, were included in the recent social email and will be available from on the Downloads page shortly.

Next of our fortnightly quizzes will be this Wednesday (10th March). 8.30pm start time, £1 per person entry fee for cash prizes. Teams of four; come with a team or team-up on the night. The quizzes take place on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month.

PSC’s Sunday Roast Lunch recommences on Sunday 7 February. The cost is £6 per person. A list will available at the Club bar from Friday 29 January – payment must be made before names can be added to the list, so we regret that no telephone bookings can be accepted. We want to avoid a situation where PSC members are unable to gain places due to the presence of large numbers of guests. As a trial, each member wishing to attend the Sunday Lunch will be able to be accompanied by no more than one (non-member) guest. So the event will be strictly one member, one guest. We will review how this works.

Some members were disappointed not to be able to get tickets for the Shanty Evening on Saturday 13th February. Seven additional tickets have now become available and will be reserved for PSC members – they can be bought at the Club's bar. The cost is £8 per person to include a fish n' chips supper.

Members interested in Graham Hurley'sbooks (he combined a Wyllie Lecture with book signing on 15 and 16 December) can order a signed copy of his latest Book Beyond Reach which has just been released. The price is £7 for a hardback copy. To order, please phoneTony Spender on 07730 98 28 09 before Tuesday 26 January, when Tony will be placing an order with Graham who will be coming to Portsmouth that week.

All contributions will be warmly welcome! (We may be able to link like-minded people together so that running an event becomes less daunting.)

On Saturday 23^rd January we shall have the PSC Burns Night Supper at the Club when we celebrate the birth 251 years ago (on 25^th January 1759) ofScotland's national bard. Come along and join us for traditional haggis with neeps and tatties, plus a wee dram for the modest price of £7.50. Good company and convivial atmosphere at no extra cost! Any queries please to John Hughes. A list should be available behind the bar from Wednesday 13^thJanuary – please note the booking arrangements set out below.

Saturday 13^th February (a change from the originally planned date) marks our annual opportunity to gather together for a Sea Shanty Evening. A group of 10 singers will lead the event so come along and exercise your vocal chords. There will be a "half time" interval, during which a fish n' chips supper will be served (a specially requested alternative dish can be ordered, but must be requested on the list at the time of booking). The cost, including food, will be £8 per person. Any queries please to Tony Spender. A list and tickets will be available behind the bar from Friday 15^th January – as with the Burns Night Supper, please note the booking arrangements set out below.

Please note: the Burns Night Supper and Sea Shanty Evening are expected to be popular events. We have to limit the number of attendees in order to comply with fire regulations and for catering planning. So for each event payment must be made at the time of booking. No telephone bookings can be accepted and no names can be added to either list until full payment has been made. There is a strict limit for each event and further bookings cannot be accepted once these have been reached.

The first 2010 edition of Port Tack, PSC's own "house journal", is due out in February. We would really welcome articles from members, particularly those who have never been included before. Although articles should preferably have some sailing link, no matter how tenuous, any subject that is otherwise connected in some way with the Club orPortsmouth would be fine. It is also useful to have a photograph or two. Short articles are just as welcome as more lengthy ones.

If you would like to contribute, please send your items to our editor, Yola Veck, at yola.veck@rya-online.net or leave it for her at the Club in an envelope, using the letter rack at the hall entrance. Yola needs to receive these as soon as possible and by 29^th January at the latest.

The next PSC Club Quiz, hosted by Paul Scott, will be on Wednesday 13th January at 8.30pm.

There will be no Club Sunday Lunch in January. Details will follow of the next lunch, which should be in February. We will also be asking you to assist with these functions as we need volunteers to organise Lunch events and help with the preparation and clearing up.

News will also follow in the coming week of the arrangements for the Club’s Burns Night event and a Shanty Evening in early February.

The Club will be open between 12 Noon and 2.00pm on Christmas Day – do pop in for a Christmas drink and make Bob’s bar stint a worth while and cheery effort!

See in the New Year at PSC! There will be a hot & cold buffet and a glass of bubbly available from 9.00pm on New Year’s Eve and all for the modest cost of £5 (payable on the night).
