Below are details of our forthcoming
social events. These are always very popular and we do need to
limit numbers, so please get your names on the lists as soon as
possible to avoid disappointment. All bookings to be made at the
Club bar or by emailing the Social
Secretary, John Hughes at social@portsmouthsc.co.uk
The next talk in our Wyllie Lecture
series is on Wednesday 23rd June when Jane Smith, local historian
and author, presents an illustrated talk entitled
Hilsea - Gateway to
Portsmouth.
Jane is a PSC member and will be talking about the history of Hilsea in its role as the gateway to Portsmouth. She describes its origins from tiny rural medieval hamlet to military base, which has been of great significance to Portsmouth for two centuries. The Hilsea of the 1930s follows with its Art Deco houses and buildings leading up to Hilsea Lido which celebrates its 75th anniversary on 24 July 2010. Instead of rushing through the gateway on to somewhere else, just for once, this talk gives us the opportunity to stop and look at Hilsea with fresh eyes.
Tickets are £5 each to include a glass of wine on arrival and cheese and biscuits after the talk. These are on sale now at the Club bar and also from Manna Tea Room (formerly “Twiggs”), 39 High Street, Old Portsmouth and from First Fitness, 37 Clarendon Road. A reserve list is available as sometimes tickets are returned; please pass your details to Tony Spender on 07730 982809 in order to be placed on the reserve list.
Apart from formal barbecue events, we occasionally hold impromptu weekend barbecues in the Boomyard, weather permitting. These are necessarily arranged at short notice, due to the vagaries of the British climate, but details are normally available at the bar on a Friday evening. These are essentially “Do-it-Yourself” events, where members bring their own food and cook it themselves on the Club’s splendid new gas barbecue. If you do attend one of these, very social, afternoons, please be prepared to make a donation of £1 per person to cover the cost of the gas used.
Looking slightly further ahead, the Victory Morris Men will be performing at the Club from approximately 9.30pm on Thursday 8th July.
